“If the Apostles argue, he who does not provide for his own family in temporal things, has denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel; to what greater degree of apostasy must he have arrived, who takes no thought to provide the spiritual welfare of his family”. – George Whitfield.
This past Sunday, February 21st, 2016, I preached a sermon detailing the role of “family” in our “Life Together” as Christians. To sum up the message, I exhorted us that the “family” should be the first seminary that Christians attend.
You can listen to that message at the following link, http://www.buzzsprout.com/11630/355180-life-together-family-matters
All of that said, as I did in the week past in regards to ‘Dating & Marriage’, I want to compile some resources you can look at in “walk worthy” in the family context.
Here is a list of verses that come from the Bible that demonstrate how we are all called to work as a unit, ultimately, allowing Joshua 24:15 to be the truth in our homes.
1 Peter 3:1-16
As many were leaving the service yesterday morning, my departing thoughts to many of you came from Pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He remarked, “A Christian family fellowship should surely be able to read and listen to a chapter of the Old Testament and at least half a chapter of the New Testament every morning and evening”.
Getting your hands on a devotional is mostly recommended, or use of the Book of Common Prayer (something I regularly use for devotions in my home with visiting friends, and of course Ms. Raven :))
The famed, Prince of Preachers, Charles Spurgeon once noted: “The Christian family was the bulwark of godliness in the days of the Puritans; but in these evil times hundreds of families of so-called Christians have no family worship, no restraint upon growing sons, and no wholesome instruction or discipline. See how the families of many professors are as dressy, as godless as the children of the non-religious! How can we hope to see the kingdom of our Lord advance when his own disciples do not teach his gospel to their own sons and daughters?”
Here is a link to a host of Puritan resources on the family that I took some time to read through and was blessed by:
A recent article I found in Outreach Magazine entitled “The Inner Sanctum of the Home” encourages families to follow this pattern to see God glorified in and through their homes:
- Read the Bible in the open, or prayerfully together 2.) Pray Together and for one another 3.) Serve others together, do randoms acts of kindness 4.) Share testimonies 5.) Speak words of blessing and encouragement (Numbers 6:24-26)
I encourage and admonish each of us to “walk worthy” in these regards. Here are a couple more links to utilize as resources in family contexts:
